Chapter 17

Organization Design

Overview

This chapter examines a number of factors important to organization design. The chapter begins with a discussion of the contingency approaches to organization design, which leads to a discussion of contingency factors such as environment, technology, and strategy as important considerations when the choice of design alternatives is faced by managers. Then it presents several organization designs: mechanistic and organic designs, the sociotechnical systems approach, the Mintzberg “pure” or “ideal” types of organization design, matrix designs, and virtual organizations. The chapter concludes with an examination of contemporary organization designs.
