Overview This chapter examines a number of factors important to organization design. The chapter begins with a discussion of the contingency approaches to organization design, which leads to a discussion of contingency factors such as environment, technology, and strategy as important considerations when the choice of design alternatives is faced by managers. Then it presents several organization designs: mechanistic and organic designs, the sociotechnical systems approach, the Mintzberg “pure” or “ideal” types of organization design, matrix designs, and virtual organizations.
