Foundations Of Organization Structure

 

Overview

This chapter explores how the structure of an organization can be a major factor in how successfully the organization achieves its goals. First, it presents an overview of organizations that places organization structure in the context of organizational goals and strategy. Next, it examines the configurational aspects of structure or the shape of the organization. Then it examines operational aspects of structure—policies or guidelines that prescribe or restrict behaviors of employees in their organizational activities. Next, the chapter addresses the dual concepts of authority and responsibility. Finally, it shows several of the classic views of how organizations should be structured.
