CHAPTER 6-Women-Owned - Minority Owned Businesses

OVERVIEW

This chapter reviews the growth of women-owned and minority-owned businesses.  It discusses differences in motivation between male and female entrepreneurs and reasons why women-owned businesses are smaller than those owned by men.  The section on minority-owned businesses discusses the obstacles and opportunities for minority entrepreneurs and the increasing number of minority-owned businesses in each ethnic group.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

    • To realize women-owned businesses have grown rapidly since 1980 as a result of many factors. 
    • To understand why women-owned businesses are often smaller than those owned by men.
    • To be able to explain why there has been a substantial increase in the number of minority-owned businesses in recent years.
    • To be able to explain the challenges and opportunities faced by women and minority entrepreneurs.
