CHAPTER 16- Understanding Information and e-Business

OVERVIEW
We begin this chapter by examining the nature of information and how it can reduce risk when making a decision. We also examine information rules and the difference between data and information. Then, we describe a typical information system. We also examine what information managers need and discuss how the size and complexity of a management information system can be tailored to individual firms. Next we describe the five functions of an MIS—collecting data, storing data, updating data, processing data, and presenting information. Then we discuss business research. Because we believe business research is important today, we describe both qualitative research methods and quantitative research methods. Next, we explore the Internet, intranets, networks, the need for standards, websites, and web search engines. We discuss how managers and employees can use the Internet and computers to increase productivity. Finally, current business application software is examined.


Learning Objectives
After studying this chapter, students should be able to:
1. Examine how information can reduce risk when making a decision.
2. Discuss management’s information requirements.
3. Outline the five functions of an information system.
4. Explain how different research methods can be used to obtain information.
5. Analyze how computers and technology change the way information is acquired, organized, and used.
6. Describe how the Internet helps employees make decisions and communicate, assists a firm’s sales force, trains and recruits employees, and tracks employee expenses.
7. Understand how software can be used to collect and distribute information.
