In January 1919, diplomats gathered at the château of Versailles near Paris to negotiate a peace treaty to end the Great War.  By the time work began, it was clear that the pre-war world map required drastic revision.
The high cost of the war, in terms of both human life and money, made negotiations difficult, and it is not surprising that the resulting treaties have long since been the subject of contentious analysis, opinion and debate.
