The North American continent is like an old sofa: it is torn by rifting, scratched by glaciation, stained by lava flows, draped in slipcovers (sedimentary layers), and augmented by additional material: pillows on the sofa, accreted terranes (exotic blocks of crust) on the continent. I developed this analogy and illustration through my work as Geoscientist-in-the-Park for C&O Canal National Historical Park. It was one of the three analogies we illustrated on our poster at the George Wright Society Conference in April 2007.
