GOL 295: Regional Field Geology of the Northern Rocky Mountains

Advice from students in the 2009 Rockies class:

"GET IN SHAPE!!!! You miss so much if you are sucking wind and in pain the whole trip."

"Be physically prepared and prepare for anything that could possibly go wrong. Take the time to get in shape, including muscle strengthening. This will help avoid injuries in the field."

"Make a careful plan of what will be needed to purchase for food stuffs with your group so that you will not spend more money than needed. Have the ability to keep food dry in the coolers, the ice melts fast and can ruin food. (crucial)"

"Bring a book or some way to relax in the evenings other than just being social. This is a group trip and there is no break from said group, it is extremely helpful to have a way to escape that if only for an hour or two every other day."

"Pack only what you need, be prepared for all types of weather especially the cold. Make sure you have a sleeping bag that will keep you warm. GET IN SHAPE!"

"Stop considering taking the course and take it; you don't get an opportunity like this often."

"While you can buy pretty much anything you need out west, shopping time can be better spent if everyone is well prepared. Take your time packing and make sure you have everything you need."

"Bring hiking sticks if you are over 30."

"Train train train, because high elevation is a lot different than being here on the Coastal Plain."

"Get a lot of sleep before you go. Pack light. Prepare for cold weather. Take samples at every stop. Take your good humor with you, be flexible, and tolerate members who might get on your nerves. Be a team player. Enjoy a unique experience."

"Two words...practice hikes."
