New geoblog: Bloc de Camp

Just got a note about a two-year-old blog about geology that has so far escaped my attention (and possibly also the attention of the curator of the geoblogosphere, Robert Huber?) Bloc de camp (Catalan for "Field Notebook") is a blog dedicated to the geological heritage of Catalonia (country around Barcelona, northeastern Iberian Peninsula). It can be read in Catalan, Spanish and English. They are also on Facebook.

Tunnelling through the Swiss Alps

There's an interesting article in this week's New Yorker that is infused with some geology. Entitled "The Long Dig: Tunnelling to Switzerland," the piece by Burkhard Bilger profiles the eccentric maker of "worms" (gigantic robotic tunnel-making machines) and a current project to bore through the base of the Alps, making Switzerland "flat" insofar as car travel and commerce are concerned. I found it pretty interesting, though it's not online, so I can't link to it.
