Hebgen Lake quake article
50 years and 2 days ago, the Hebgen Lake Fault slipped, and triggered the Madison River Landslide. Here's the article I wrote about it for EARTH magazine.

Wow, what a powerful quake! Your article is a good reminder of how strong they can be.
A quake that strong could very well it southern California within the next ten years.
Certain faults there (including the southern San Andreas) are overdue for a quake - but whether or not their will be a 7.5 in California within the next few years I don't know for sure.
There has been a recent increase in earthquake activity in Southern CA. I think there was even a 6.9 a few weeks ago in the gulf of California - which is after the article that I am citing below was written.
“Lucile Jones, a seismologist with the U.S. Geological Survey, said that although experts can't predict future quake activity, it appears Southern California is waking up from a steep drop-off in seismic activity so far this decade. ...”

Orion rises in the east before sunrise this time of year. Curiously for me, The first appearance of Orion is what I equate with a new year.
I suppose that is a vestige of my childhood... the school year starts when Orion rises in the morning???
