The National Academy of Sciences and its US National Committee for DIVERSITAS are pleased to request your participation in a symposium in honor of the 200th Anniversary of the birth of Charles Darwin. The goal of the symposium is to focus attention on both the opportunities for designing policies that strengthen and make use of biodiversity and ecosystem services – and the dangers of pursuing policies that put ecosystems at risk.
Speakers will discuss the importance of biodiversity and ecosystems to the public good, and examine the intersection of biodiversity and ecosystem services with key policy issues including climate change and energy; trade, pests and pathogens; and food security. The presentations and discussions at the symposium will be summarized and published in a National Academy workshop report.
Speakers will include Sir Peter Crane (University of Chicago), Cristián Samper (Director, National Museum of Natural History), Steve Schneider (Stanford University), Michael Donoghue (VP, Yale University) Achim Steiner (Director, UNEP), Yadvinder Mahli (Oxford University), Bruce Babbitt (former Secretary of the Interior), Tom Lovejoy (Heinz Center), Jim Collins (NSF), Andrew Revkin (New York Times), and scientists and policy makers from around the world.
