Wow - those photos are really beautiful.
The site doesn't say anything about copyright - how does Collier feel about having his images used in, say, class powerpoints? I know that's educational usage, but in the electronic age, when it's so much easier to copy material, I would like to know how the artist feels about it.
I would like to be able to use Shiprock and Sheep Mountain and the Henry Mountains, at the very least, in class.
It's a good question. I don't know -- he doesn't have a website of his own, so I don't know how to contact him. My guess is he wouldn't mind, especially if you bought one of his books! :)
I saw him speak at NSF, and as he is a geologist, he said that the work he is most proud of is the stuff that ends up in geology books! So, I'm sure he wouldn't mind the use of his photos, with proper attribution of course. I can try to dig up his contact info.
I can probably get you all his contact info - also, a lot of his photos are on the Earth Science World Image Bank website (along with many others). It's a really good resource for powerpoint photos, too - you can download fairly decent sized images, and get high-res copies from the administrators.
This just in from Michelle, my contact at NSF, who got it from the program officer who hosted Michael Collier:
I'm afraid I do not have Michael's contact info. However, I think that so long as the images are used in non-public settings (e.g. classrooms) there are no copyright issues.
I published Michael Collier's work when I worked at the Museum of Northern Arizona Press in the 1970s, when we both lived in Flagstaff. He's a tremendous photographer and an amazing human being.
