* [As of September 2010] In order to transfer to a university via the
Guaranteed Admissions Agreements (GAA), please note:
· GAA requires a B average in specific course requirements
· Any D or F (or a C, D, F in ENG 111/112) disqualifies one from the GAA
· Repeating courses and averaging grades won't affect GAA-eligibility (instead, take your chances with regular transfer admissions)
Learning is an emotional and intellectual undertaking helped by
diverse resources, such as those below that address
Quality of Life
(and thus the ability to study). Student needs and learning styles vary widely (63,000+
NOVA students
enroll in credit courses each year) and so the links below will hopefully address this spectrum adequately.
If an issue
arises that affects your ability to study in my
mathematics class, please tell me so that we can either resolve the
matter or
find an explanation that calms your mind.

The unendorsed information below
comes from diverse sources (including students). Read carefully as you judge its
worth, noting both
what is covered and what is not (called exclusions) in a policy. This
information is posted because
some of my past students have suffered an
uninsured
health crisis (that also hurt their
studies) and did not know where
to find information on health insurance.
This imperfect information (that neither VCCS, NOVA, nor I endorse) is
staged
to give students a starting point from
which they can address their own health insurance needs.

for NOVA's brief description
(or contact Dr. Bernadette Black, bblack@virginia.edu).
Although this program may seem irrelevant to
mathematics students, know that the humanities and sciences can work
together to
address issues that confront society, each contributing its tools and
concepts. This BIS program may
later appeal to mathematics and
operations research students who seek to
apply mathematics to "the human condition",
a matter whose complexity shall
always surpass the grasp of the sciences (and thus make them grow). Such
applications include mathematical sociology, mathematical psychology, and cliometrics (the mathematical modeling of
history, for which a Nobel Prize
in Economics was awarded in 1993 to Robert Fogel).

During our lives, we'll find our first job, retrain into another, establish ourselves in a profession, seek a calling, consider new paths in Life, and deal with unpredictable market and personal conditions. As the years pass and challenges mount, it may help to remember these December 2009 words of "Kip", a long-time consultant (to the U.S. Government and industry) who has had to re-invent himself to stay on top: "You must think outside the box and look ahead in order to move forward." The links below may help you to do so when dealing with career matters.
