MTH 7 Trigonometry Syllabus
Alexandria Campus
Northern Virginia Community College
The text is available on line for each student to access and print. The web site is http://www.nvcc.edu/home/jwilkin/trig/trig_text_draft.htm
While you need only print a section at a time, please keep the text in a 3 ring binder. In total, there are currently about 180 pages in the text.
Additionally, you must have a graphing calculator, such as a TI-83 or TI-84. For the first section, you will need a protractor.
MTH 7 at Alexandria is given as a "self-instructional" course. This means there are no lectures, no set schedule of test dates. You set your own schedule, but to pass you must satisfactorily all tests by the end of the term for which you registered. The text has been written to be self-instructional. The role of the math lab faculty and staff is to assist you with concerns and problems giving you difficulty and to administer tests on the material.
There are 10 sections in the text. The text has been written in an interactive style. This means that many examples include "fill in the blanks," expecting you to think about the example, determine your answer and fill it in. Correct answers for the fill-ins are found in the end notes at the end of each section.
You should complete the first 6 sections by midterm break. The last 4
sections are longer and you will then have the second half of the semester to
complete them.
Testing:
Tests are given in the math lab, AA161.
There is a test for each section and a comprehensive final. For each test, you must score at least 70. If you don't do so, you must take a second test on the same material, on which you must score at least 70 (and so on until you score at least 70). You may not take a test for section 2 until you has passed a test for section 1, and so on. A math lab faculty or staff will review your graded tests with you.
Grades:
This course is graded on a pass-fail basis. You will pass the course (grade: S) only if you have passed all 10 section tests and the final exam. If you have passed at least 6 section tests by the end of the term, your grade will be R, meaning to continue the course you must reenroll (including payment of tuition) for the next term. If you have passed fewer than 6 section tests, you will fail the course (grade: U)
