The Personal Home Page
by Agatha Taormina
| A colleague of mine calls the World Wide Web" the world's largest vanity press." A look at the wide variety
of personal pages on the Web will confirm the accuracy of that statement.
A personal home page is a web site established, published, and maintained by an individual and intended to provide information about and reflect the personality, abilities, interests, and/or responsibilities of that individual. Faculty personal pages are generally really professional pages which include contact information, information on courses currently being taught, and information on any research project the author is working on. They may or may not contain personal information. Some personal pages are devoted to a person (Princess Diana, Leonardo diCaprio), a pet, a hobby (stamps, baseball) or a topic (Star Trek, water gardens). Some personal pages are the result of significant effort and research on the part of the author. The audience for a personal page can range from family and friends to the world at large. Accuracy and objectivity can range from none to complete, depending on the purpose and intended audience for the page and the background and intent of the author. |
