Create a Storyboard
with MS Organization Chart

by Agatha Taormina

One easy  way to create a storyboard is to first create the storyboard as an organizational chart in Microsoft Word and then copy it into a Word document or a web page.
To create a storyboard in this way:
  • Open Word.
  • Open a new file.
  • Choose Insert, Object from the main menu.
  • The Object dialog box will appear.
  • Choose MS Organization Chart 2.0 from the Create New tab in the Object dialog box that appears.
  • Click OK.

The Microsoft Organization Chart will appear in a new window,

Microsoft Organizaton Chart

Type the name of your home page in the highlighted area.

To add a box to the storyboard,

  • Click on the menu bar button that describes the relationship (probably either subordinate or co-worker) between the existing box and the new box.
  • Then click on the existing box and the new box will appear as an offshoot of the existing box.
  • Place your cursor inside the box to type the name for the box.
  • Continue in this fashion until you have completed the storyboard.
When you are finished, choose, File, Update Document 1.

File, Update Document Menu

Your organizational chart will be inserted in your Word document.
You can now copy this chart to the Windows Clipboard.
  • Choose Edit, Select All from the main menu to highlight the chart.
  • Choose Edit, Copy to put a copy of the chart on the Windows Clipboard.
From here you have several choices. If you have access to image editing software such as Microsoft Image Composer or Photoshop, you can paste the organizational chart in the software and save the selection as a gif  or jpg file.  Then you can insert the chart in your web page as an image file.
You can also copy the storyboard into Microsoft PowerPoint and apply your own background image to it.

For directions on how to manipulate your storyboard in PowerPoint, see the article Create a Storyboard with PowerPoint.
