Add and Align Table Data

Once you have created a table you will want to add content to the table cells.

To add text to a table:

  • Position your cursor inside a table cell and type.
  • Move from cell to cell with either your cursor or the Tab key
  • To continue to add rows to your table, insert your cursor in the last cell in the last row and column of the table and press the Tab key. A new row will appear.
You can align the text in a particular table cell in a number of ways.

Highlight the text and press one of the alignment buttons on the Format toolbar.

You can also use the Tables toolbar to adjust the alignment of your table data. Remember that you can display the tables toolbar by choosing View, Table Toolbar from the main menu.

Set Cell Properties FrontPage 98 makes it easy for you to change many other properties of individual table cells.
There are several ways to highlight the table cells whose properties you want to change:
  • Highlight a cell by placing the cursor within the cell, then choosing Table, Select Cell from the main menu bar.
  • Highlight a number of adjacent cells by dragging your cursor over them.
  • Highlight one cell, then choose Shift + Arrow Key to more easily control your choice of adjacent cells.
  • Highlight non-adjacent cells by highlighting the first cell, then using Control+Cursor to choose your other cells.

Once you have highlighted the cells to manipulate, be sure your cursor is in one of the cells, right click, and choose Cell Properties from the pop-up menu.

The Cell Properties dialog box will appear:

In the Layout section in the upper left hand corner you can specify how data should be aligned in the highlighted cells.

In the Minimum Size section in the upper right hand corner you can manipulate the sizes of individual cells.

In the Custom Background section in the middle of the dialog box you can specify a background image or background color for the cell.
In the Custom Colors section at the bottom of the dialog box you can specify the colors of the cell border.

If you specify either a light border color or a dark border color, you can create a three-dimensional effect with your cell border.

The color in the Light Border box will be the highlight color; the color in the Dark Border box will be the shadow color.

Reminder: Netscape Navigator may not display colored table borders.

Tables, especially borderless tables, can be used to great effect to force a particular layout design on a web page.

However, you will need to tinker with your table by adjusting the table and cell properties. It is a good idea to save and preview the file after every adjustment to your table.

VERY IMPORTANT: Be sure to preview the table in both Microsoft Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator before you publish the page.

Both browsers have a tendency to interpret table tags and attributes in different ways.
