General Definitions

Once you have mastered the basic table and learned how to control the arrangement of the content of the individual cell, you will want to create more complex table designs.

You can create a complicated table in Standard mode. However, Dreamweaver gives you the option to use Layout mode to draw a table in any configuration you desire.

To switch to Layout mode, select View, Table Mode, Layout Mode from the main menu bar. A Layout mode notice Layout mode appears at the top of your document window.

When you have finished designing your table, return to Standard mode by clicking on the exit link next to the Layout mode notice at the top of your document window.

Notice what happens to my table when I switch from layout to standard mode. (I've added a table border so you can see the table design more clearly.)

Standard mode

You can see how easy it would be to create an elaborate table design in Layout mode.

Switch to Standard mode before you put content in your table.

Tables, especially borderless tables, can be used to great effect to force a particular layout design on a web page.

However, you will need to tinker with your table by adjusting the table and cell properties. It is a good idea to save and preview the file after every adjustment to your table.

VERY IMPORTANT: Always be sure to preview your tables in more than one browser. Browsers have a tendency to interpret table tags and attributes in different ways.
