A seed-ship from Earth, meant to colonize a distant planet, is stranded on a world covered by water. The crew uses germ cells to set up a colony of microscopic humans able to live in fresh water and leave with the colony a record of their origins.

Eighteen generations later the microscopic colony decides to explore the world above the water.
