In 1985, Thursday Next, a Special Operations Literature Detective, pursues master criminal Acheron Hades, who has kidnapped Thursday's uncle Mycroft, the inventor of a Prose Portal that allows fictional characters to pass into reality and vice versa.

Aided by her time-travelling father and Edward Rochester (yes, Jane Eyre's Rochester), Thursday attempts to bring Hades to justice while pursuing peace in the Crimean War (yes, it is still going on), and attempting to mend her own love life.

Filled with puns and literary allusions in a world in which people come to bloes over the question of who wrote Shakespeare's plays, a world in which people adore Jane Eyre despite an ending which sends the heroine off to India as a missionary, The Eyre Affair is a time travel tour de force.
