Lawn and Garden Pests

Unfortunately our carefully tended greenscapes will eventually contract disease and/or suffer from pests.

Before you reach for chemical remedies, remember: With plants, the best offense is a good defense.

A healthy and strong plant is much less likely to suffer long-term ill effects as a result of disease and/or pests. Weak plants will likely succumb when attacked.

    A few preventative steps:
  • test your soil. Nutrient deficiencies can weaken plants and make them susceptible to disease and pests.
  • don't over fertilize: too much nitrogen encourages lawn diseases.
  • don't water at night: molds, mildews, blights, and rusts love cool damp environments, and will wreak havoc on your ornamental and vegetable plants alike.

The scope of disease and pests that can attack your greenscape is more than I can address in this web site. However, I can point you in the right direction for expert assistance.

If you already have plant disease and/or pests, check The Organic Gardening Ring for some simple, earth friendly treatments.

If the organic remedies do not arrest the problem, check with Ortho. They have a line of chemicals to treat every disease, and quite effective insecticides and animal (deer, racoon, dog) repellents.
