There are four major sources for information about science fiction authors, works, and themes:

  • general reference works such as encyclopedias
  • books
  • articles from magazines and journals
  • Internet

Public libraries carry a good selection of novels. Academic libraries are likely to carry classic novles and the works of literary authors.

Most public and all academic libraries also carry a selection of critical works on fiction in general and on individual authors.

You can access all of the resources of the NVCC libraries from the NVCC Library Home Page. From here you can quickly link to the NVCC Catalog.

You can request a book from any campus to be delivered to any campus of your choice. You will need your Student ID to check out books.

You can search for full-text articles in magazines and newspapers from a number of online databases that the NVCC libraries subscribe to.

To access these databases from home you will need an Internet connection and a User ID and password.

Information about setting up your access from home is available at http://www.nvcc.edu/library/proxy/

You will want to check two of the online databases:

  • InfoTrac OneFile
  • Literature Resource Center

You may also find information on selected authors and titles on the Internet.

However, remember that anyone can publish a web site. Before you utilize any material from a web site, establish the credibility of the site's author and the accuracy of the site's information.

See the article "Checklist for a Personal Web Page" for a checklist to determine the credibility of a web site.
See also the Resources section of my Novels web site for a critical bibliography of books and an annotated list of web sites related to modern novels and authors.

Remember that if you use any outside source in the preparation of an academic paper you must document that source using the documentation format of the Modern Language Association.

See my MLA Style Guide for more information.
