ENG 267: The Modern Novel

TIME You should allow two hours to complete this exam. 
MATERIALS
  • This Exam Pass
  • Your NovaConnect EmplID
  • Notes of your choice.
DIRECTIONS
  • When you present your Exam Pass to the Testing Center Proctor, he or she will have you log on to the Eng 267 Blackboard.
  • Choose Exams from the buttons on the left side of the Blackboard screen.
  • Choose the Exam #1 link. The proctor will enter the password to allow you to access the exam.
  • Open a new document in Word.
  • Put your name on the document.
  • Answer the following exam question with a clear, concise, well-organized essay of between 300-500 words.

In a well-written 2-3 page essay, discuss your history as an educated reader. Cover the following topics:

  • your definition of the novel
  • your perceptions of why people read novels
  • why you read (or don't read) novels
  • what you enjoy (or don't enjoy) reading; be specific as to genre, authors, titles
  • your perceptions of what sorts of novels constitute literature (that is, what sorts of novels will stand the test of time)
  • your sense of the bases on which a novel should be evaluated

You may use notes as an aid to writing your exam, but you must leave the notes with the exam proctor who will forward them to me.

IMPORTANT: As you work on this exam, please save your file every 10 minutes or so.

When you are finished with the exam, run a spell check and proofread carefully for grammatical and mechanical problems. Edit for organization and style. Please double space your essay.

Save the document one last time.

  • Now Choose Edit, Select All, then Edit, Copy from the menu bar at the top of Microsoft Word.
  • Return to the Blackboard. Position your cursor inside the Text Box.
  • Choose Paste from the menu bar and your exam will appear in the text box.
  • Preview your exam to be sure it has been completely copied to the Text Box. Make sure that the manuscript properly displays formatting such as italics and page breaks.
  • Click on Submit. Wait for the message that your exam has been successfully submitted.
  • Turn your notes in to the Testing Center proctor.

At your first opportunity, email the instructor to inform her that you have taken the exam.

GRADING Within one week of notifying the instructor, you will be able to pick up your graded exam in the Digital Drop Box in the Eng 267 Blackboard
