| Themes and Motifs | |
| Works of future war generally focus on the nature of the military, its weapons and tactics, and on the nature of the enemy. | |
| Key Works | |
The War of the Worlds by H. G. Wells sets the tone of fear of the alien enemy but is really an alien invasion novel as the aliens are defeated by disease and military tactics play little or no part in the story. Robert A. Heinlein's seminal future war novel Starship Troopers which dealt with a young recruit facing his fears and becoming a soldier provided a model for the future war story. Compare it to The Forever War by Joe Haldeman and Cobra by Timothy Zahn. Another popular future war novel is Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card. |
