Definition
In fantasy, portal worlds are worlds that are separate from but can be accessed from the real world. They differ from parallel universes in science fiction because there is no attempt to provide a scientific explanation for either the existence of the alternate world or the method of moving from the portal world to the real world and back again.

Very often a human is drawn into a portal world to save it from some sort of danger. Humans also often enter portal worlds in order to mature and find their own destinies.

Many portal world stories are written for young adults. Famous portal worlds include:

  • Wonderland from Lewis Carroll's Alice books
  • Oz from Frank Baum's series of books
  • Narnia, created by C. S. Lewis
