Tolkien, J.R.R.
1892-1973
British medievalist and Beowulf scholar

Best known for his Lord of the Rings trilogy; the novels reached cult status with their U.S. paperback publication in 1965.

A prequel, The Hobbit, had been published in 1937.

Tolkein is a major influence on fantasy fiction.

Twain, Mark
pseudoynm of Samuel Langhorne Clemens
American writer

Though best known for Tom Sawyer and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Twain also set the pattern for time travel novels with A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court.
