This site began as a companion site for my English course, English 256, Literature of Science Fiction, taught online through the Extended Learning Institute of Northern Virginia Community College. Originally the site contained only recreations of lectures I had given in my brick-and-mortar classroom and discussion guides to the works I assigned in the course.
I gradually started to add brief summaries of the plots of other stories and novels I had been reading and an overview of science fiction film.
I began to realize how much science fiction and fantasy overlap even as, under the influence of the Harry Potter novels, I began to read more fantasy.
I added an overview of science fiction film, then I began giving a yearly presentation on science fiction film in a friend's film class.
I realized my original site was not designed for easy expansion, and I wanted to include more material on fantasy in the site.
You see the result here.
I have a lot more material to add to this site and I will do so in the coming months.
This site is meant to be accurate, but not necessarily definitive, and certainly not exhaustive, as the fields of science fiction and fantasy have grown so quickly over the past few decades that one person can't possibly keep up.
I hope you enjoy this site and find it useful. |
