Needed Supplies: You will need a box of 10 High-Density 3.5-inch floppy disks or a USB Flash Drive.
Objectives: ITP 170 is designed to explore all nine project management knowledge areas--project integration, scope, time, cost, quality, human resource, communications, risk, and procurement management--and all five process groups--initiating, planning, executing, controlling, and closing--and apply it to Information Technology projects. One project will be completed during the semester, and it will be based on the following criteria: a) it is an IT project b) it utilizes a project team of at least 4 members (not including you, the project manager) c) it can be completed in 120 working days d) it utilizes a budget. This (3 CR) 16-week course (Summer 12 week course) requires approximately a total of three, or three and a half class hours per week.Course Grading: Your grade for this course will be based on your performance on one Project (40%), 10 weekly tasks to be applied to a running case, or individual project (2% each), 20 written Discussion Questions (1% each) and a short Project Management research paper (10%). Attendance and Participation (10%).
Prerequisite: Prerequisite is working knowledge of Windows, Microsoft Word, Excel and Access.
Important Dates: Visit http://www.nvcc.edu/calendars/ to confirm. Last day for tuition refund September 5, 2006. Last day to withdraw without grade penalty or change to audit October 27, 2006.
Homework: Students are expected to read text assignments prior to each session, complete all assignments and actively participate in class. There will be homework assignments as described on a separate page. Each assignment will be due before, or at the beginning of the next class. Late assignments will be penalized one point (1) per class period late. All assignments are expected to be the result of your own effort, not the collaboration with others. Print your work and staple the completed assignment together. Enter your name, course number, assignment number, page number, due date on the right side of each page of the homework, discussion questions, short research paper or project. You may send me assignments as attachments to e-mail messages, or you may give me a floppy disk with your work instead of printing it.
Make-up Exams: Students are not expected to take tests. If a student is absent from class, it is his/her responsibility to acquire class information and assignments. The student may use books, notes, and Netscape, Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox or the Opera browsers to do research. Be sure to include one page, the first page of such paper with your work to give proper credit to the author of that publication. Academic dishonesty (cheating on an assignment) will result in a zero for that assignment.
Project: There will be one Final Project due at the end of the semester (40% of grade). The Project will be presented to the instructor and to the rest of the class at the end of the semester. All students are expected to actively participate in the class, discussion questions, and homework. For the Final Project, a portfolio will be created. This portfolio should include the completed final project, with the name of the student, section number, e-mail address, date, and all the files used for the project during the semester. The final project will be formatted as an executive communication and these are some of the components it must include: Table of Contents, Executive Summary, Project Charter, Work Breadkdown Structure, Scope Statement, Schedule, Resources, Cost/Budget, Project Quality/Testing, Communication Plans, Risk Assessment, Change Management Plan, Issues Log, Bug Database. Your project schedule will be created in Microsoft Project and must inlude: Project Tasks, Predecessors and Completion Dates, Taks Durations, Milestones, Creating Task Dependencies, Creating Work Breakdown Structures, Creating Reports, Entering Cost and Resource Data, Assumptions and Constraints, Precedence Relationships, Tracking Gantt Charts, Using Templates.
Attendance and Participation: Your presence and active participation are essential ingredients in your own learning. Class will start on time. Class material missed is your responsibility. I will not provide you with previous class lecture notes.
