BIO

Dr. Alicia de la Torre Falzon is Professor of Spanish at Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) - Annandale Campus. Dr. Falzon formerly taught at American University. She holds a Bachelors from Catholic University, a Masters from American University and a Doctor of Philosophy in Latin American Literature from George Washington University. In 1992, Dr. Falzon received a NEH scholarship to study in Mexico. Dr. Falzon has been teaching Spanish since 1983.

At NOVA, Dr. Falzon teaches SPA 101, 102, 201, 202, 233, a Spanish for Health Professionals and 102, 201 and 202 Spanish Honors courses. Dr. Falzon served as Assistant Division Chair for Foreign Languages during the 1997 and 1998 academic years. She also serves on numerous committees at NOVA. She was nominated for the outstanding teacher award by her students in 1998. In summer1999, Dr. Falzon conducted a Spanish immersion program in Valencia, Spain through the Institute for Spanish Studies. She took students who attended classes daily for three weeks and lived with local families.

During the 1997 and 1998 academic years, Dr. Falzon chaired the Virginia Community College System (VCCS) Foreign Language Peer Group which was charged with developing recommendations for a statewide use of technology for the teaching of foreign languages. Dr. Falzon put on a conference for foreign language professionals in 1998 dealing with distance learning issues, the virtual learning classroom and the use of technology to bring foreign language instruction to students in remote locations. Dr. Falzon has received several grants from VCCS and has developed the Annandale Foreign Language web site linking students and professionals throughout the state. While on sabbatical Dr. Falzon researched and developed a proposal to initiate a Dual Enrollment program for High School students at the request of then NOVA President Dr. Belle Wheelan.  Dr. Falzon is currently engaged in bringing the program to fruition.  Dr. Falzon is frequently a guest speaker before Civic and Community groups as a member of the NOVA Speakers Bureau.  She speaks on current issues in Latin American literature.

Dr. Falzon belongs to several professional organizations including MLA, AATSP, SAMLA, GWATFL,SIGMA DELTA PI and the Mexican Cultural Institute.
