Communications covers a myriad of worlds. Communications has an in disciplinary heritage. Classical scholars and philosophers studied the meaning of messages. Communications is a field of study. Communications is part of the world of humanities, along with English and philosophy with a qualitative analysis. Communications is also a social science, along with psychology and sociology with a quantitative analysis. Communications is performance-based art such as oral interpretation, speech and drama. Communications is technology and mass media. Families, businesses, organizations, the media. But they all have one thing in common: relationships. How we communicate determines the health of those relatioships. Communication refers to the process of human beings responding to the symbolic behavior of other persons. Two operative words are in that deviation: process and symbolic How is communication a process? Communication never exists in isolation. Relevant history determines how something is interpreted. "I'd like to snuggle up to you." Did a new sweetheart comment on your appearance or was it sexual harassment? "You should consider being an attorney." Was that your debate coach's response to one of your speeches or a parent trying to tell you to get a stable job? As stated in Understanding Human Communication, meaning comes from the unfolding of an interrelated series of images. In other words, your experience.
Equally important is the concept that communication exits because of symbols.
