About NVCC Tang Soo Do
The Northern Virginia Community College (NVCC) Tang Soo Do Student Interest Group is a traditional martial arts club  that is based at the Alexandria Campus of NVCC and is facilitated by Brown's Karate. The group is also open to members of the local community and faculty of the college. We focus on three aspects of traditional martial arts training: basics, form and sparring and use traditional Tang Soo Do training primarily as a way to develop the mind and body, secondarily as a sport and fighting method. Consequently, we do not bill our art as a “combat art” or a system of “self-defense.” Of course one inevitably learns some self-defense skills through the practice of Tang Soo Do, but spiritual development, personal growth and perfection of character are the main goals of Tang Soo Do training. We adhere to the "Eight Key Concepts", requisites of mental and physical training as developed by Moo Duk Kwan founder, Hwang Kee. We also observe the "Dojo Kun" as conceived by Shotokan founder, Funakoshi Gichin.  We are members of the United States Goodwill Tang Soo Do Association and some members of the club compete in the Amateur Athletic Union Taekwondo program.

Master Instructor Barry Brown (on right)
Barry Brown began his training Japanese Shotokan Karate in December, 1966 under Teruyuki Okazaki in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In mid-1967 Barry moved to Washington, D.C. and began training with Ki Whang Kim, a Moo Duk Kwan Tang Soo Do stylist and student of Kanken Toyama.  At the Kim studio Barry often attended classes taught by Master Soo Wong Lee.  After several months, Master Lee left to open his own school in northern Virginia and Barry soon followed.  While training at the Lee school, Barry met James K. Roberts a contemporary of Master Lee and student of Hwang Kee. When the Lee school closed in mid-1972, Barry joined the Roberts school and by the end of 1972 was awarded his 1st Dan. Eventually, Barry became a regular instructor at the Roberts school.  He competed in numerous tournaments and won a number of times.  The highlight of his competitive years was winning the Grand Championship at Master Ron Jenkins’ first tournament in 1985.  In 1988 he earned his 5th Dan and continued to earn promotions at the Roberts school until 2004 when he was awarded his 8th Dan from Master Roberts. Barry has 43 years of experience, currently trains regularly and still engages in free-sparring with all of his students of Brown’s Karate and members of the NVCC Tang Soo Do Student Interest Group.
