Methods of Instruction: The class will be structured around lectures, discussions and problem solving. There will be a question and answer period  before  class. It is essential that you do your homework.  It is essential that you do your homework in order to benefit fully from this class.

 

Attendance: Attendance will be taken on a daily basis. Regular attendance and punctuality will be required. Any student that fails to attend class after the first two weeks will be withdrawn by the instructor.

 

<>GRADING POLICY:  During the semester you will be given three exams each worth 100 points and a cumulative final worth 200 points. From the three exams, I will drop your lowest score and keep your two highest scores. Your two highest scores will be added to your final exam grade. The final exam will be cumulative and cannot be dropped. Also, everyone must take the final exam. In addition, you will be given a total of 12 minitab assignments. From the twelve minitab assignments, I will drop your two lowest scores and keep your ten highest scores. Each minitab assignment will be given a grade of satisfactory or unsatisfactory. Each grade of satisfactory will be worth two points and each grade of unsatisfactory will be worth zero points. Therefore, your grade will be based upon a total of 420 points as follows:

B = 336-377
C = 294-335
D = 252-293
F below 252 

 

 

THERE WILL BE NO MAKEUP EXAMS OR MAKEUP MINITAB ASSIGNMENTS GIVEN DURING THE SEMESTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  If you miss an exam it will count as the exam to be dropped. If you miss two exams you should consider dropping the course. You will have a 100 point deficit from which it may be impossible to receive a passing grade. If you miss a minitab assignment it will count as one of the minitab assignments to be dropped. ALSO, THERE WILL BE NO EARLY FINAL EXAM. EVERYONE WILL TAKE THE FINAL ON THE DAY THAT IT IS SCHEDULED. FAILURE TO TAKE THE FINAL DURING THE TIME IT IS SCHEDULED WILL RESULT IN A GRADE OF “F” FOR THE COURSE.

 

EXAMS: Each exam will be based upon assigned readings, homework and lectures. You must show all of your work to receive credit for a problem. Clarity and appearance will usually result in a higher score. FINALLY, ANYONE CAUGHT CHEATING ON AN EXAM WILL RECEIVE A GRADE OF “F” FOR THE SEMESTER.

If you wish to withdraw from the course, do not forget to officially withdraw through the registrar office. FAILURE TO OFFICIALLY WITHDRAW WILL RESULT IN A GRADE OF “F” FOR THE COURSE. The last day to withdraw or change to an audit is Oct 29.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:  Math 241 stresses modern statistical methods with applications to the social and natural sciences. The course focuses on descriptive statistics, probability, probability distributions, and estimation of statistical parameters from samples, hypothesis testing, and experimental design. It provides the necessary statistical background for people interested in such diverse fields as psychology, sociology, computers, business, engineering, mathematics and science.
