History of Architecture

Text: Architecture-From Prehistory to Post-Modernism , Trachtenberg & Hyman
Purpose: To familiarize students with architectural works and ideas which are considered historically significant.
This course is divided into four topics: Week Reading Chapter Pages
Classical Architecture 1,2,3,4 2,3 83-155
Early Christian, Byzantine and Pre-Romanesque 5,6,7,8 4,5 155-200
Romanesque and Gothic 9,10,11,12 5,6 200-280
Renaissance and Baroque 13,14,15,16 7,8 280-380
Assignments and Exams :
Every three weeks each student will be expected to produce an ink on Mylar ( 18”x24” ) drawing of an assigned building of historical significance. These drawings should include a floor plan and a perspective or section through the building. An elevation is optional. Non –architecture majors may substitute a five page illustrated paper.
Each student will make an oral presentation on the building assigned. Please make 30 copies of your text and graphic information gathered in your research.
These assignments will comprise 40% of the final grade. Four exams will comprise 60% of the final grade.(20% for take home exams—40% for in class exams)
