Welcome to GPS for Success @ ELI! The Extended Learning Institute (ELI) is the online division of the College. NOVA’s GPS for Success program provides a comprehensive advising experience to students who are recent high school graduates, have never been to college before and are enrolled in an academic program. We strive to retain our students by building connections with advisors and faculty, and teaching students how to plan and evaluate their academic performance.

Placement Testing

All incoming GPS for Success students are required to complete the English and math placement tests before they are able to attend Student Orientation and register for classes. If you are not local, you can request to have your English and math placement tests proctored in your area. See the Proctor Request Form below.

For more information on placement testing, use these links:

Student Orientation

Once you have completed your placement testing, you are ready to sign up for a Student Orientation session. Attending Student Orientation is required for all GPS for Success students. As an ELI student, you can participate in a New Student Orientation session at any NOVA campus, or online. Virtual sessions are listed under ELI, and available for students planning to take all their courses for their first semester online through ELI. Sessions are offered throughout the year. Academic Advising

First-Year Advisors @ ELI

All incoming GPS for Success students will be assigned a First-Year Advisor who will help you:

  • identify and refine your academic goals
  • choose the appropriate program and courses for that program
  • connect with the appropriate resources; and assign you to a faculty advisor who will help you prepare for your second year and transition to a four-year university
  • decide if online learning is right for you
  • find the resources available to you both virtually and on-campus
