SCHOLARSHIP POLICY
NVCC Educational Foundation Scholarship Policy
(Adopted July 1997, Amended December 12, 2001)

Students at Northern Virginia Community College have a number of options available to help reduce the direct and indirect costs of earning a college education. Students may be eligible for grants and loans at the state and federal level. For more information regarding public grants and loans, please contact the Financial Aid Information Service at http://www.nvcc.edu/finance. In addition to these sources, a number of generous individuals, companies, foundations and associations have established scholarships to assist students.

Contributions to establish scholarships through the NVCC Educational Foundation are given voluntarily to help students offset the direct costs associated with earning a college degree. The NVCC Educational Foundation does not dictate how scholarship funds are to be used, but the Foundation does have a fiduciary responsibility of making sure funds are used in the manner specified by the donor.

Unless a donor specifically requests that scholarship funds be given directly to the student as a supplemental income stipend, it is the policy of the NVCC Education Foundation to only disburse scholarship funds equivalent to the amount of the student's tuition expense for each semester. Scholarship monies should be applied to student accounts first, thereby generating a bill directly from the college to the Foundation. The Foundation does, however, recognize that this may not always be the case and is willing to make allowances in certain cases. Students who are funded by other sources, such as Pell Grants, who pay out-of-pocket, or have other funds applied to their account before their scholarship may be reimbursed to the equivalent of their tuition expense for each semester.

Allowances for books and supplies will be reimbursed on a $90 per class basis (based on $30 per credit hour/ 3 credit hours per class formula) up to $450 per semester based on a 15 credit hour course load.. Any expenses incurred above the $450 per semester allowance will require the proper documentation (receipts) for reimbursement.

The total amount of scholarship funds awarded to an individual through NVCC Educational Foundation Scholarships is limited to $2,500 per academic year.

Each scholarship announcement will indicate how the student may use the funds. Funds not used by a student in his/her allotted scholarship period will be returned to the account.
