Welcome

The Northern Virginia Community College (NVCC) Educational Foundation, Inc., offers a variety of scholarships to students with diverse interests and backgrounds. Students may learn about eligibility criteria and application procedures on the College Financial Aid Web site at http://www.nvcc.edu/finance. Scholarships designated for particular curricula (e.g., nursing, math) require that the applicant be program placed in that curriculum and pursuing a certificate or associate’s degree.

I don't qualify for financial aid, can I still be awarded a scholarship?
Absolutely! Not all Foundation Scholarships are need-based. This means that anyone can apply and receive the award. Many scholarships are set-up to award academic excellence and many scholarships are established to provide school-related assistance for specific segments of the NVCC student body.

What kinds of scholarships are available?
Each year the NVCC Educational Foundation awards over 100 scholarships, loans and awards in excess of $70,000. Scholarships range from emergency loans to full-tuition scholarships. Awards may be used for tuition, books and necessary supplies at NVCC. Funds are available for the academic year following the semester in which the award is made and are not available during the summer session. Students who receive scholarship awards are only eligible to receive the amount equivalent to the cost of their tuition, books and supplies for the indicated award period. Unused funds will be returned to the account.

The amounts of the award may vary from year to year. Generally, they fall between $500 and $1,500. The criteria and deadline for each scholarship is described in the scholarship announcement. The total amount of scholarship funds awarded to an individual through NVCC Educational Foundation scholarships is limited to $2,500 per academic year. This brochure contains a list of NVCC Educational Foundation scholarships with abbreviated criteria. Not all scholarships are available every semester. Announcements are posted early in the fall and spring semesters on scholarship bulletin boards located near the College Financial Aid Office and on the College Financial Aid Web site.

How do I apply?
A standard scholarship application form (NVCC 125-73) is required for most scholarships and may be obtained from the College Financial Aid Office or printed directly from the College Financial Aid Web site at http://www.nvcc.edu/finance. One application must be completed for each scholarship for which you apply. All scholarship applications should be mailed to: College Financial Aid Office, Northern Virginia Community College, Forbes Office Center, Annandale, Virginia 22003-3796. No attachments may be added to the application unless specifically requested in the criteria. The Student Financial Aid Committee selects all scholarship recipients except those selected by the donor or a specified campus committee. The president of Northern Virginia Committee College appoints the Student Financial Aid Committee. The Committee is made up of counselors and teaching staff from each of the six NVCC campuses, deans of student development, the director of College Financial Aid and Support Services, the director of the NVCC Educational Foundation or designee and members of the student body. The Committee meets at least once each semester. The NVCC Educational Foundation notifies students selected to receive Foundation scholarships.

NVCC Educational Foundation Scholarship Policy
Students at Northern Virginia Community College have a number of options available to help reduce the direct and indirect costs of earning a college education. Students may be eligible for grants and loans at the state and federal level. For more information regarding public grants and loans, please contact the College Financial Aid Office at 703-323-3199. In addition to these sources, a number of generous individuals, companies, foundations and associations have established scholarships to assist students.

Contributions to establish scholarships through the NVCC Educational Foundation are given voluntarily to help students offset the direct costs associated with earning a college degree. The NVCC Educational Foundation does not dictate how scholarship funds are to be used, but the Foundation does have a fiduciary responsibility to make sure funds are used in the manner specified by the donor.
Unless a donor specifically requests that scholarship funds be given directly to the student as a supplemental income stipend, it is the policy of the NVCC Educational Foundation to disburse only scholarship funds equivalent to the amount of the student’s tuition expense for each semester. Students who are funded by other sources, such as Pell Grants, who pay out-of-pocket, or have other funds applied to their account before their scholarship, may be reimbursed to the equivalent of their tuition expense for each semester.Allowances for books and supplies will be reimbursed on a $90 per-credit-class basis (based on $30 per credit hour/three credit-hours per class formula) up to $450 per semester based on a 15-credit hour course load. Any expenses beyond the $450 per semester allowance will require the proper documentation (receipts) for reimbursement.

The student may use funds as outlined by the scholarship announcement. Funds not used by the student in his/her allotted scholarship period (fall and spring semesters of the award year) will remain in the scholarship account. The following is a list of scholarships offered by the NVCC Educational Foundation; the criteria have been abbreviated. Not all scholarships are available every semester. For more detailed information on any scholarship listed below or to find out which scholarships are currently available, please visit the College Financial Aid Web site or contact the College Financial Aid Office at 703-323-3199.
