Emergency
Scholarships Available for
Some Students Affected by Tsunami
The Institute of International Education and the Freeman Foundation have invited accredited colleges and universities in the United States to nominate up to four students per campus for the awards.
The students must be citizens or permanent residents of the eligible countries; they must have been enrolled in an associate or bachelor's program as of December 2004; and they must have an immediate need for financial help for the spring semester. Colleges are not required to match the grants, but they must give the students some additional form of assistance.
"By providing emergency assistance to students from Southeast Asia whose families may have lost their homes or livelihoods, our goal is to alleviate immediate financial burdens and provide a measure of security during these difficult times, when so many have lost so much," Houghton Freeman, chairman of the Freeman Foundation, said in a written statement.
The deadline for nominations is February 1. A second round of nominations may be held later.
Further information about the grants is available on the institute's Web site.
