Eligibility

Eligibility for a Federal Work-Study award is determined from your completion of the Federal Application for Student Financial Aid (FAFSA). This form must be completed each award year. The FAFSA does not require a processing fee. Forms may be obtained from the campus Financial Aid Information Service or by calling the College Financial Aid Office at 703-323-3199. You may also apply through the Internet by using FAFSA on the Web. The web address is: www.fafsa.ed.gov.

To be eligible for an award a student must meet all eligibility requirements for Federal Student Financial Aid. A student must demonstrate financial need.

Awards

If you qualify for a Federal Work-Study award you will be notified by means of a Financial Aid Award notification letter. Awards average $ 1900 for the award year (Fall and Spring semesters). You cannot earn more than your award. You will be paid for the hours you work on an hourly wage rate.

Approval Forms

After you receive a Federal Work Study award, you should check out the job listing at this web site and contact the Work Study Placement Coordinator at your home campus. This individual will work with you to assign you to a position that meets your interest (when possible) and scheduling needs. You may work after you complete the Work Study Approval Form (NVCC 125-170) with your supervisor. You must also complete all payroll forms to establish your eligibility to work at the College.

Job Responsibilities

After you accept a position, you must report to work regularly and on time. You should call your supervisor directly if you will not be able to report to work. If you do not report to work, call your supervisor or satisfactorily fulfill the requirements of your position, you may be dismissed from the Federal Work Study program. Personal calls and meals should be scheduled before or after work hours. You should dress appropriately for the job.

Confidentiality

In your work-study position you may have access to College and student records. Confidentiality of records must be maintained. Breaches of confidentiality and/or any act of dishonesty may result in dismissal from the program.

Time Sheets

Time sheets are to be completed accurately every two weeks and submitted to the Payroll office by your supervisor before the deadline. Information on these dates and times is available from your supervisor. Your signature constitutes a statement of work performed.

Getting Pay

State requires all employees to participate in Direct Deposit/Electronic Fund Transfer as a condition of employment. Therefore, you are required to have either a saving or checking account in order to get your pay through direct deposit. If you don't have an account, you may obtain a free checking account through Apple Federal Credit Union.

College Holidays

Work study students do not work when the College is officially closed. The supervisor must approve any exceptions to this policy and initial the time sheet.
