Hybrid Overview – The Hybrid Checklist and Hybrid Policies


Duration – 2 hours training
2 hours asynchronous online and outside activity

  • This one-day course is a “grandfathering” requirement for faculty who taught hybrid courses prior to Spring 2012.  The course covers in detail the new NOVA policies regarding hybrid instruction which are found in Appendix K of the 2011-2012 Faculty Handbook.

Faculty, who fulfill Blackboard Competency, attend the Hybrid Overview and demonstrate their course meets the requirements of the Hybrid Course Review Checklist, will receive the Hybrid Instruction Certification.

Hybrid Instruction Certification Program

This Hybrid Instruction Certificate is delivered over four weeks. New Faculty examine the best practices for building a hybrid course. 

Hybrid Certification: Track 1 – Hybrids at NOVA

Duration - 2 hours training and 2 hours asynchronous online(Activity to be completed before next session)

  • During this portion of the course, faculty will discuss what constitutes a hybrid course according to NOVA standards and begin the process of organizing a hybrid course. 

Hybrid Certification: Track 2 – Technology and Collaboration

Duration - 2 hours training and 2 hours asynchronous online
(Activity to be completed before next session)

  • The various types of technologies such as; Merlot, Web 2.0, Voice Threads, etc. are discussed and sampled. Faculty comfort level is increased in their use of technology in hybrid instruction.

Hybrid Certification: Track 3 – Design and Activities

Duration – 2 hours training and 2 hours asynchronous online

  • Faculty focus on how the design of a hybrid course impacts the interaction and the goal of activities to meet learning objectives.

Hybrid Certification: Track 4 – Putting it all together

Duration – 2 hours training and 2 hours asynchronous online

  • Faculty focus on how the design of a hybrid course impacts student interaction and engagement.  The workshop will demonstrate how to redesign and blend learning objectives for the online environment.
