Improving Interpersonal Communication Skills
NOVA offers a number of courses in which individuals may gain insight to improved interpersonal communication. Eligible employees are strongly encouraged to take advantage of available tuition assistance funding. To determine if funding will be available, employees should request tuition assistance prior to course registration.
PSY 120 Human Relations: Introduces the theory and practice of effective human relations. Increases understanding of self and others and interpersonal skills needed to be a competent and cooperative communication. (3 CR)
PSY 125 Interpersonal Relationships: Studies individual behavior as it affects the individual's relationships. Considers such topics as attitude, needs, values, leadership, communication, and group dynamics. Teaches constructive methods of interpersonal problem solving. (3 CR)
PSY 126 Psychology for Business and Industry: Focuses on the application of psychology to interpersonal relations and the working environment. Includes topics such as group dynamics, motivation, employer/employee relationship and interpersonal communications. May include techniques for selection and supervision of personnel. (3 CR)
SPD 126 Interpersonal Communication: Teaches interpersonal communication skills for both daily living and the world of work as it applies to perception, self-concept, self-disclosure, listening and feedback, nonverbal communication, attitudes, assertiveness, conflict resolution, and other interpersonal skills. (3 CR)
ENGL 578 Essential Communication Skills: The ability to communicate effectively with a wide variety of people is the most important reason why some people succeed in the world of work, and others fail. In today's workplace, understanding how to communicate well is an essential office skill. In this hands-on course, learn fundamental interpersonal skills, the basics of telephone excellence, and how to provide superior customer service to both internal and external customers. (1.2 CEU)
EDUC 617 Interpersonal Skills and Techniques: The course focuses on effective, practical interpersonal skills and techniques used by successful human resource professionals. Key concepts include group dynamics, coaching, trust building, recognition, conflict management and occupational stress. Specific skills include identifying strengths of self and team members, delivering effective positive feedback, process observation, performing employee satisfaction audits, rewarding employee behaviors in non-monetary ways, responding to conflict and developing a positive atmosphere for communication. (1.2 CEU)
PSYC 593 Achieving Success With Difficult People: Do you know people whose behavior makes completing even the simplest tasks difficult? Would you like to learn how to have more successful relationships with difficult bosses, co-workers, students, neighbors or family members? Join this class and get helpful information for understanding yourself, solving people problems, and improving your relationships and personal and professional productivity. Prerequisite: Internet access, email, and Netscape or Internet Explorer Web browser. (2.4 CEU)
