Blackboard Collaborate - Faculty

Blackboard Collaborate is NOVA’s current e-conferencing system. It is a Java-based Web conferencing application that facilitates interactive online instruction, help and meetings. Blackboard Collaborate combines the best of what was formerly Elluminate Live! and Wimba Classroom. Collaborate provides real-time two-way audio, application sharing, Web browsing, white-boarding, and text chatting.

Blackboard Collaborate can be used

  • with your students within a Blackboard course or
  • for online meeting rooms for participants within and outside of NOVA.

Support and Meeting Room Set Up

For faculty and staff needing help setting up sessions, contact eliitsupport@nvcc.edu and a staff member will be happy to assist you.

For online meeting rooms outside of the Blackboard system, for office hours, committee meetings, combined class sections, etc., contact eliitsupport@nvcc.edu or call 703.764.5051. Meeting rooms set up outside of the Blackboard system are available for use for an entire semester.

Java and the JNLP File

Blackboard Collaborate utilizes Java for each session and to playback recordings. Each time you enter a session or playback a recorded session, you will be asked to run a JNLP file. You must run this file or the application will not load.

You can check your system requirements here to ensure that your computer is equipped with what is needed during the workshop.

Request Session

Requesting a Blackboard Collaborate Session

You must first complete a 2-hour Blackboard Collaborate training provided by Technology Training to ensure moderator abilities. Once completed, your information will be forwarded to the support group and a session will be created for you.
