Welcome to the website for the Police
Department at Northern Virginia Community College.
We are excited about being a part of this academic
environment and interacting with each member of this
institution. Our goal is to enhance the learning environment
of NVCC by providing the safest community for the enjoyment
of our faculty, staff, students and visitors. As you
read and learn more about our department, please feel
free to call or email any member of our Department
with your comments about our service.
Our Department: All
NVCC police officers are fully trained and certified
by the Commonwealth of Virginia. Six Campuses located
across three counties and one city comprise our College.
A police office is located within each campus jurisdiction
and is staffed by a supervising officer and patrol
officers. These police offices include 40 police officers
and some civilian staff. All officers and civilian
employees of our department are committed to the public
safety at NVCC.
Patrol Division: The
patrol officers are the backbone to any police department.
These officers are given arrest powers and continue
to update themselves with further training. The police
officers in our department are true professionals. Some
of their duties include but are not limited to the protection
of life and property, the enforcement of Virginia Laws,
and NVCC Policies. In addition, our patrol officers
protect the massive investment within the physical facilities
on each campus. They accomplish this by securing the
facilities and maintaining patrol within our grounds.
Our patrol officers respond to all emergency calls whether
it is police, fire, or medical in nature. They investigate
all types of crimes (Misdemeanor or Felony) and make
the appropriate arrest or disciplinary referral when
needed. Our patrol officers use vehicle and bicycle
patrol in addition to traditional foot patrol to provide
visible coverage to the NVCC campuses. Because most
of the patrol officers have some specialized training
and/or experience (ie: computing, interviewing suspects,
emergency responses, Field Training, etc), they pull
their resources together in order to better serve the
NVCC Community.
Investigations: The
police officers at our campus are tasked with conducting
investigations when crimes occur at the College. They
handle investigations of serious crimes like larceny,
assault, and sex crimes and work closely with the local
jurisdictions and court systems to prepare investigations
for possible trial. Investigations will utilize all
the department's resources and contacts in order to
solve these more serious crimes. The patrol officer
will be the first responder to a serious crime and will
investigate the case with all available resources to
improve the solvability of that case. Occasionally,
sensitive matters will result in special investigations.
All officers are dedicated to their work and get results.
Employment: If
you are interested in applying for a position with our
police department, you should obtain an application
from the Northern Virginia Community College Human Resource
Department located in the Brault Building at the Annandale
Campus. You can view all open NVCC employment positions
available (including police positions) through the NVCC
Human Resources Website. This website will also explain
how to submit an application in person, by mail, or
by a supplied online form. The NVCC Human Resources
Department continuously recruits for the police officer
position. They forward all police related applications
to our department for review. Human Resources will then
notify accepted applicants of their position on the
continuous recruitment list. Our department will notify
the applicant of an interview date if a position is
available and their application was accepted for interview.
