NVCC's five campus libraries send over 12,000 title
requests a year to Media Processing Services, NVCC's central technical
services. MPS orders, receives, pays for, catalogs and ships the materials,
and maintains fund accounting records for the $1,150,000 + materials budget.
NVCC purchases most books from our contract vendor, Baker & Taylor.
Staff use B&T's web-based Title Source system for selecting materials.
The old acquisitions system was a 25-year-old batch process mainframe
system, based on the 80-column punch card. It provided title lists and
raw accounting data. Staff badly needed an online acquisitions system
to take over many manual functions, but had no funds to purchase one.
Tim Wolf, a fiscal technician senior in MPs, met with staff and designed
a system.
