Hurricane Katrina Relief Effort

NVCC Policies for Disaster Relief Volunteers

Tuesday, September 20, 2005

Message from Vice President Alison W. Baker to all Faculty and Staff:

Dear Colleagues:

Under Virginia employment guidelines, classified staff and administrative faculty who volunteer to provide help in response to a disaster may take up to 80 hours of paid leave to serve as a volunteer. This policy does not extend to teaching faculty. A person interested in being a volunteer and taking this leave must be associated with a care-giving organization and be selected by that organization to provide specific volunteer services. Evidence of such selection is required to be given this leave. Employees' supervisors must approve the leave.

In response to the Hurricane Katrina disaster, NVCC is registering as a care-giving group through the Medical Education Campus's Medical Mall. Employees not otherwise associated with a registered volunteer group who wish to volunteer their services in aid of hurricane victims should contact Ronda Wright at rwright@nvcc.edu for information on this effort. The NVCC group expects it would be deployed to assist victims being sheltered at Fort Pickett near Blacksburg, Virginia, but volunteers could be posted anywhere there is a need.

There is a detailed application process, and volunteers will need to have current immunizations against hepatitis B and Tetanus. Those immunizations are available from your personal physician, from the local health department, and at the Medical Mall for any volunteers.

Any teaching faculty who wish to take leave to volunteer would need to request a leave without pay to be away from the college. The existing policies regarding leaves without pay apply.

If you have any questions about these leave policies, please contact the Human Resources Department. If you have skills you think might be needed by hurricane victims and would like to be considered as a member of the NVCC volunteer group, please contact Ronda Wright.

Thank you very much.

Alison Baker
