Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) invites applications for its newly created position of Associate Vice President for College Marketing & Communications. This individual will serve as the College’s chief marketing, branding and communications strategist, and advise the President and senior administration on all matters related to reputation and image. The post includes administrative responsibility for the following areas at the college: community relations, media relations, publications, call center management, web communications, internal communications and special events.
Overall Objectives
This position is a critical link in the college’s efforts to develop and execute a comprehensive institutional marketing and communications strategy that will connect NOVA to its key markets, enable it to develop a consistent and coordinated institutional image, and promote its regional and national reputation. This position provides the leadership and vision needed to promote communication and understanding among the College and its core internal and external constituencies. The Associate Vice President also will play a key role in the College’s overall recruitment marketing efforts, and is expected to play an increasing role in advancing fundraising and legislative relations activities.
Reporting Relationships
· The Associate Vice President will report directly to the Vice President for Institutional Advancement, and will work closely with the President, campus provosts and deans, and other key administrators to advise them on matters related to public image and communications.
· The Associate Vice President will be the direct supervisor of the key service units that support the College’s marketing, branding and communications efforts.
· The position will also chair a College-wide work group on student recruitment which will include high school outreach specialists from each campus, and serve as a member of a College-wide work group comprised of NOVA’s community outreach specialists.
Required Qualifications
· A minimum of a master’s degree from an accredited college or university required with a major in communication, journalism, public relations or related field desired. Significant expertise and experience working with the media and with higher education is essential. A strong knowledge of college marketing and recruiting processes would also be valuable assets.
· A minimum of eight (8) years of professional experience with demonstrated professional advancement to a management-level position, and the ability to succeed while assuming increased responsibility, managing multiple major projects, and managing others.
· Experience in developing and executing institutional communications programs. Must have a deep working knowledge of institutional branding, marketing, communications, and publication strategies.
· Must be a strong communicator with excellent written, presentation and oral communication skills.
· Must possess excellent judgment; be able to think creatively and strategically; function as a consensus-builder; and serve as an institutional diplomat, fostering a spirit of teamwork among diverse offices throughout the college.
Duties
Responsible for implementing a comprehensive and integrated strategic marketing and communications plan to raise visibility, awareness and enhance the reputation and image of Northern Virginia Community College among its key external and internal constituents. Build and manage a creative and service-oriented central integrated marketing and communications unit to support the branding and communication needs of NOVA and its six campuses, two centers and online institute. Serve as a confidante and counselor to the President on all matters relating to NOVA’s strategic communications and public image objectives. Oversee and manage all official public communications and media relations for the college, the President, and the campuses. Serve as spokesperson for the college, providing official responses on key administrative issues, and represent the President and the college in public forums and meetings as assigned. Counsel individual campuses and academic departments on their overall marketing strategy and insure that all communications and publications are in compliance with college identity and standards. Plan, implement and manage communications programs and/or projects to enhance public awareness of NOVA, including its campuses, departments, faculty, students and alumni. Play an integral role in fostering positive town/gown relationships in the communities NOVA serves; advise the college in enhancing relationships with local high schools, institutions of higher education, and local governments to support the college’s transfer education and workforce development functions. Assume lead responsibility for the logistics planning, execution and promotion of major college-wide events such as commencement, convocation and cross campus days, and serve in a consulting capacity with NOVA’s individual campuses as requested to assist in quality campus-based events. This position will report to the Associate vice President of Institutional Research, Planning and Assessment.
