Mission Statement

The mission of the Office of College Information Systems (CIS) is to provide effective and timely support to the faculty, staff, and students who use the college’s NovaConnect application to perform essential business transactions, such as enrolling, grading, payment processing, financial aid packaging and awarding, graduation certification, and transcript production.

Business areas encompassed by the NovaConnect system, which is shared by the 23 colleges in the Virginia Community College System (VCCS), include Admissions and Academic Records, Academic Advising and Counseling, Student Financials, and Financial Aid.  CIS also supports Resource 25, the Faculty Information System, and other ancillary applications that are critical to the efficient operation of NVCC and enable it to distinguish itself academically and meet its institutional objectives.

To accomplish this mission, CIS:

  • Troubleshoots and promptly resolves end user and system problems
  • Produces and disseminates accurate information in electronic or printed form to the user population and other NVCC constituencies
  • Designs, develops, and tests queries, reports, and customizations that satisfy user specifications
  • Provides professional and technologically advanced programming services to ensure that systems are functioning properly and associated databases are built and maintained in accordance with the college’s and VCCS policies and procedures
  • Updates and maintains business process documentation
  • Collaborates with other Office of Instructional and Information Technology (OIIT) divisions and units, such as the Technical Applications Center (TAC) and the IT HelpDesk, the VCCS, and a wide range of academic and administrative offices to optimize system capabilities and end user proficiency
  • Implements and deploys new functionality that becomes available through application upgrades or enhancements
  • Acts as ‘technical/functional’ experts to business process groups that enhance existing business processes or develop new ones
