NOVA College Board

Welcome Letter from the Board Chair

Dear Northern Virginia Neighbors, Prospective Students, Students and NOVA Faculty and Staff,

Dr. Jerome "Jerry" Barrett,
Chair, NOVA College Board

My College Board colleagues and I thank you for your interest in learning more about the NOVA College Board.  As Board Chair, I am honored to be given the opportunity to work with President Templin, my fellow board members and the entire college as we continue to position Northern Virginia Community College as a premier regional institution.  With over 150 areas of study that can lead to degrees or certificates, I am confident that the college will continue to be responsive to the higher educational and work force needs of our region while making a real and lasting difference for Northern Virginia's families and businesses.

As representatives appointed by local cities and counties, College Board members are uniquely positioned to help campus leaders advance college interests and respond to community concerns.  Board members collaborate with campus provosts as members of Campus-based Outreach Teams.  We do this to keep in touch with local board and council members, area members of the Virginia General Assembly, and local public school system board members. As campus provosts see the need, we also collaborate in areas where Board members might be of special assistance in making campus-specific projects or initiatives happen.  Finally, we work to tap community support for the supplemental financial assistance the college needs to support NOVA's continued growth and strategic relevance.  As NOVA and the state community college system approach our fiftieth anniversary, we welcome the opportunity to advance the college's core values of access, opportunity, student success and excellence.

In closing, I would like to note that the current NOVA College Board and I owe a great debt of gratitude to those men and women who served the college and the community before us.  From those who were charter members of the Advisory Board of what was then the "Northern Virginia Technical College" in 1965, through to my predecessor as Chair, Mr. David Miller of Fairfax County, we are grateful for your example and leadership.

Sincerely,

Dr. Jerome "Jerry" Barrett,
Chair Northern Virginia Community College Board
