Spring 2013 Mini Workshops

Speech Anxiety: How to overcome your fears

  • Time Frame: 15 – 30 Minutes including questions
  • Dates: Offered in March 19, 2013. Please contact the OCC in March to view available dates.
  • Overview: During this mini workshop, students will face their public speaking anxiety by charting their levels of public speaking anxiety, describing behaviors that audience members can do to make the presenter feel more comfortable, Identifying nervous habits related to public speaking, and will learn techniques to manage those habits. (This workshop is available in a 10-15 minute presentation and 20-30 minute presentation)

Visual Aids: How to use visual aids effectively

  • Time Frame: 15 – 20 Minutes including questions
  • Dates:   Starting February 12th, this workshop will be offered.  Please contact the OCC to view available times.
  • Overview: During this mini workshop, students will learn how to effectively use visual aids during oral presentations, explore a variety of visual aid options such as Prezi and PowerPoint, learn the dos and don’ts of a successful oral presentation, and the benefits of using visual aids to enhance their presentation.

Body Language: The importance of non-verbal communication

  • Time Frame:  10 – 15 Minutes including questions
  • Dates:  Starting February 13th, this workshop will be offered. Please contact the OCC to view available times.
  • Overview: During this mini workshop, students will explore the importance of non-verbal communication, analyze five body language errors that could affect their presentation negatively, and learn valuable techniques to improve their oral communication skills.

Selecting a speech topic

  • Time Frame:  15 – 20 Minutes including questions
  • Dates:  Starting February 12th, this workshop will be offered. Please contact the OCC to view available times.
  • Overview: During this mini workshop, students will learn how to successfully choose a topic for their presentations by answering three essential questions: What is my general purpose?, What is my core message?, And who is in my audience? At the end of the workshop students and instructors will share speech topic ideas in a brainstorming format with the hopes of jump starting the speech preparation process.

Introductions: Preparing an introduction

  • Time Frame:  10 – 15 Minutes including questions.
  • Dates:  Starting February 11th, this workshop will be offered. Please contact the OCC to view available times.
  • Overview: The purpose of this workshop is to help students gain a better understanding of what an introduction is and how it should be structured. This is done by emphasizing the importance of an attention getter, the identification of the topic of the speech, establishing credibility with the audience, and finally a quick foreshadowing of the main points.

Conclusions: Preparing a conclusion

  • Time Frame:  10 – 15 Minutes including questions.

  • Overview: The purpose of this workshop is to help students gain a better understanding of what a conclusion is and how it should be structured.

Outlining: The key to a successful speech

  • Time Frame:  10 – 15 Minutes including questions.
  • Dates:  Starting February 14th, this workshop will be offered. Please contact the OCC to view available times.
  • Overview: During this mini workshop, students will review the basic structure of speech outlines, gain tips for creating an effective speech outline, and view examples of the various outlines used during public speaking.
