Electronic Structure of the Atom

 

          In this lab you will use the computer to explore the concepts introduced in Chapter 7.  You can study light, the Bohr theory of the atom, quantum numbers, electron configurations and periodic trends.  Obtain a “Discover Chemistry” CD from your instructor and follow the instructions below.

 

Instructions:

If using computers other than those located in room AA431, select “start”, “programs”, “Discover Chemistry”, “Discover Chemistry” for steps 1-3. Otherwise, just follow the directions below.

 

1.     Double-Click on the “Chemistry” Folder:

2.     Double-Click on “Discover Chemistry”:

3.     Click on the screen:

4.     Click on “Atoms”

A)   Click on “Light”

            a) Click on “Electromagnetic radiation”

Explore the various features

For example, click on “Ultraviolet” notices the changes in l, n and E (Energy).  Click on “Microwave” etc.  Click on “Problems” Work the problems until they begin to repeat.

B)    Click on “Models of the Atom”

a) Click on “Bohr H-Atom” and explore.

b) Click on “Quantum Numbers” and work the problems until they repeat.

C)   Click on “Electron Configurations”

a)     Click on “Elemental Configurations” and explore.

b)    Click on “Atoms and Ions” and work the problems until they repeat.

D)   Click on “Periodic Trends”

a) Click on “Periodic Properties” and work the problems.  Put the pointer on the periodic table and examine the periodic trends.
