COURSE INFORMATION
Surveys techniques used in the veterinary hospital laboratory. Includes clinical chemistry, serology and immunology. Emphasizes the use of microscope, automated laboratory equipment and modern diagnostic procedures. Lecture 2 hours. Laboratory 3 hours. Total 5 hours per week.
GENERAL COURSE PURPOSE
This course is designed to provide the veterinary technology student with basic knowledge and skill in the area of veterinary immunology, serology and clinical chemistry as applicable in routine clinical practice.
ENTRY-LEVEL COMPETENCIES
Enrollment is limited to program placed students in Veterinary Technology or with approval from Program Head of Veterinary Technology.
COURSE OBJECTIVES/EDUCATIONAL OUTCOME
b. The student will learn the basic principles of the immune system including anatomy, physiology and pathology.
c. The student will learn serological principles utilized as diagnostic methods in veterinary medicine including ELISA and RIA.
d. The student will learn serological techniques using in-hospital test kits currently available.
e. The student will learn special procedures for collection, storage and shipment of serological samples.
f. The student will learn the principles of clinical chemistry testing involving colorimetry and photometry.
g. The students will learn to perform common tests used to evaluate organs employing function tests and enzymology.
h. The students will learn to use various types of clinical chemistry instruments and the routine care of the instruments.
