VET 116 - ANIMAL BREEDS AND BEHAVIOR (3 CR.)

COURSE INFORMATION

Surveys common species of domestic animals including basic husbandry, care and handling. Introduces identification of various breeds and their characteristics including behavior patterns, problems and solutions. Lecture 2 hours. Laboratory 3 hours. Total 5 hours per week.

GENERAL COURSE PURPOSE

This course is designed to be a survey of the common species of domestic animals including the bovine, equine, porcine, ovine, caprine, canine, and feline. Common breeds, basic husbandry and thenogenology will be covered. The students will also be introduced to normal behavior patterns, handling and restraint techniques, basic training and common behavior problems of domestic animals.

ENTRY-LEVEL COMPETENCIES

Enrollment is limited to those students program placed in the veterinary technology curriculum or those students with special approval from the program head.

COURSE OBJECTIVE

To acquaint the student with the common breeds of large and small domestic animal species. Breed characteristics, fundamental husbandry, and reproductive management will be covered. Students will learn how to handle and restrain domestic animals. They will recognize normal and abnormal behavior and gain basic knowledge regarding behavior problems of domestic animals.

MAJOR TOPICS TO BE COVERED:

a. Common breeds of bovine, equine, porcine, caprine, ovine, canine and feline.
b. Basic principles of husbandry.
c. Reproductive cycles.
d. Humane handling and restraint techniques.
e. Normal and abnormal behavior patterns.
f. Principles of animal learning and animal training techniques.
g. Common behavior problems and basic treatment techniques.
